Lawyer Cites ChatGPT-Invented Fake Witnesses in Murder Appeal

Stephen D. Aarons used ChatGPT in a murder appeal and submitted briefs containing fabricated witnesses and testimony that the New Mexico Supreme Court found to be false. The court sanctioned him $5,000 and held him in direct contempt of court at an August hearing. Aarons was barred from appearing before the court, removed from the case, and a public defender was assigned to his client.
Why it matters
"Do you watch the news? Do you listen to the radio? Do you read anything about what's going on in the world?” one of the judges asked the lawyer, who submitted false testimony and witnesses after using ChatGPT.
