Is ‘Attention’ the Essence of Intelligence?
Quanta Magazine
Attention underpinned a shift in neural machine translation when Dzmitry Bahdanau and collaborators replaced fixed-size sentence representations with an attention mechanism that let models handle long sentences effectively, later scaled by Google’s transformer architecture. The transformer paper from 2017, “Attention Is All You Need,” reported state-of-the-art translation while using a fraction of the computation needed to train earlier models, and it has been cited more than 250,000 times. This changed model design by making attention central to modern large language models, enabling broad next-word language modeling that powers systems like ChatGPT.
Why it matters
Research suggests human thought is not purely linguistic, with more brain regions lighting up than just those associated with language when we think. The issue notes that while language helps us communicate about the world, our thoughts seem to draw on many other areas beyond language networks.
