Startup Hark just launched "Handoff," an AI that browses the web and clicks around like a human to finish real tasks for you. It claims to beat GPT-5.4 and Claude Opus at booking tables, ordering food, and messaging on LinkedIn.

Hark wants to build an assistant that doesn't just chat with you but actually does things, and today it pulled back the curtain on Handoff, its browser-operating AI agent. The pitch is simple: most of what people do on computers happens inside a browser, not through some tidy API, so if you want an agent that can genuinely act on your behalf, it needs to click, type, and scroll its way through the same messy websites humans use.

The numbers behind that reasoning are stark. Hark says it analyzed nearly 3 million minutes of screen activity and found that three-quarters of it happened in a browser. Fewer than one in a thousand websites even bother offering a public API, and the ones that do — think DoorDash, Target, Zillow, LinkedIn — usually expose only a sliver of what a person can actually do on the site. So Hark built Handoff to just use the internet the way we do: log into your accounts, remember your saved addresses and preferences, and navigate live, unpredictable interfaces without a script.

Every request spins up its own virtual computer, complete with browser, file system, and terminal, which is a heavier and more flexible setup than a typical bot. The demos Hark published show Handoff placing a DoorDash order, comparison-shopping on Target, booking an OpenTable reservation, messaging LinkedIn candidates, and even reserving flights on United or Delta — all recorded as live screen captures rather than staged mockups, according to the company.

On benchmarks, Hark claims Handoff tops the Online-Mind2Web leaderboard, beating GPT-5.4 by 8 points on average and Opus 4.8 by 2, with a wider lead over Gemini's latest models. The training story behind that is more interesting than the leaderboard flex: Hark says it's still in the post-training and mid-training phase, with dedicated pre-training planned later this year, and that reinforcement learning — letting the agent fail and retry on real tasks — did most of the heavy lifting on harder benchmarks after supervised fine-tuning got it partway there. The company also touts a cost advantage, claiming an order-of-magnitude cheaper price per token than rival frontier models.

Handoff isn't broadly available yet — Hark says its platform launches by end of summer, with a waitlist open now. Whether it holds up outside curated demo videos, especially against sites actively designed to block bots, is the real test nobody can benchmark from a leaderboard.

My take

Every AI lab eventually discovers that the API economy was a mirage and the real internet is a pile of JavaScript, CAPTCHAs, and login walls — so full credit to Hark for building for that reality instead of pretending otherwise. But self-reported benchmarks against a company's own harness, paired with cherry-picked screen recordings, should be read as a marketing pitch, not proof; the actual test comes when Handoff meets a hostile, bot-blocking website in the wild, not a curated demo of DoorDash. If this works as advertised, expect every retailer with a login page to start actively fighting these agents within the year, which will make the browser an even messier battlefield than it already is.
