Google plans to kill Assistant on your phone on September 4

Google's finally pulling the plug on Assistant, September 4. Your phone, watch, headphones and car stereo all get force-migrated to Gemini whether you like it or not.
Google has picked a death date for its old voice assistant, and it's not far off. Starting September 4, Assistant will begin shutting down on Android phones, with Google saying in a user email that the process could take several weeks to fully roll out across devices. If you're still using Assistant out of habit or stubbornness, you'll get a bit of a grace period, but the outcome is the same for everyone eventually: Gemini or nothing.
This has been coming for a while. Google originally wanted Assistant gone by late 2025, but pushed the timeline back to give Gemini more time to catch up on features people actually relied on. That delay tells you something — Gemini wasn't fully ready to replace a decade-old product overnight, and Google apparently needed the extra months to avoid a rockier transition.
The bigger story here isn't really about phones. Killing Assistant on mobile means killing it everywhere that mobile connection touches — smartwatches, headphones, and cars running Android Auto all get swept into the Gemini switch whether their owners asked for it or not. Most smart home gadgets already made the jump earlier, so this is really Google closing out the last holdout categories.
Anyone who already switched to Gemini won't notice a thing on September 4. But for the holdouts who kept Assistant around because it just worked, this is the moment the choice gets made for them.
My take
Forced migrations like this are what happens when a company decides an old product is a distraction rather than a commitment — users don't get a vote, they get a deadline. Gemini might genuinely be better, but Google training people to expect their tools to vanish on a corporate schedule is a bad habit dressed up as progress.
