European tech funding snapped back hard in September. Startups raised €15.8 billion across 300 deals, after €3.2 billion across 165 deals in August. That is almost five times the money and a clear jump in deal count too.

The month was unusually top-heavy. Twenty-five companies closed rounds above €100 million, and three deals crossed the €1 billion mark, including rounds for Mistral and Nscale. Even so, 34 deal values were not disclosed, so the total still leaves some money sitting behind closed doors.

Mistral’s round was the headline number: €3 billion in Series D funding at a post-money valuation above €21 billion. That made it the largest deal of the month by a wide margin. It also tells you where investor appetite is still strongest: AI, at least when the company at the centre of it can pull a number like that.

Cloud was the leading sector by investment volume, taking 35 per cent of September’s total funding, or €5.5 billion. The UK was the top fundraising market, with €7.3 billion across 65 transactions. On the exit side, Europe saw 39 transactions in the month, with Germany leading on eight, followed by France on six. The UK and Sweden recorded three each.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

The money is still flowing to the same familiar places: AI, cloud, and the biggest markets. That’s not a comeback story so much as a reminder that Europe’s startup capital is plenty active, just highly concentrated. The rest of the ecosystem can applaud from the cheap seats.
