EON wants to move the data superhighway from ocean fiber to space lasers

A new startup wants to replace undersea internet cables with satellites shooting lasers at each other. It just raised $10.75M to prove space beams can move data as fast as ocean fiber.
Every time you stream a video or ping a server on another continent, your data probably swims through a fiberoptic cable lying on the ocean floor. Those cables work, but they're expensive to lay, painful to fix, and vulnerable to anything from a dropped anchor to a curious shark. Endeavor Optical Networks, or EON, thinks the fix is to skip the ocean altogether and bounce the data off satellites instead.
Founded in May by CEO Charlie Horowitz and CTO Tyler Presser, EON just came out of stealth with $10.75 million in seed funding from General Catalyst and Andreessen Horowitz. The pitch: build roughly 20 laser-equipped satellites that link data centers across continents, aiming for throughput around 2.4 terabits per second. That's a wild leap from what's been demonstrated so far. NASA's laser comms from the Moon and private efforts from York, Kepler, and Cailabs have topped out around 2.5 gigabits per second, connecting orbit to the ground. EON wants roughly a thousand times that, and it wants to do it while fighting clouds and atmospheric distortion, the classic enemies of any laser link.
The company isn't trying to build everything from scratch. It plans to buy satellite buses off the shelf, likely from Apex Space, where Horowitz previously worked as chief of staff and later director of special projects. EON's own job is the optical terminal — especially the gimbals that aim the laser precisely enough to hit a target thousands of miles away. The team includes Presser, a NASA-trained astronautical engineer, plus veterans from Google's network infrastructure group and Amazon's satellite broadband effort, so the resumes at least suggest they understand the scale of the problem.
EON isn't chasing every route. It wants the underserved and expensive ones — France to Australia, Africa to South America — where laying new fiber doesn't pencil out. Hyperscalers and AI labs are the obvious first customers, since nobody moves more bits around the planet than they do. A demo satellite is targeted for around the end of 2027, aiming for at least 800 gigabits per second of downlink, which would already be a record if it works.
And EON has bigger, better-funded company in this race. Blue Origin's TeraWave project envisions over 5,000 satellites delivering up to 6 terabits per second, dwarfing EON's ambitions in scale. But bigger fleets take longer to build and launch, and EON is betting that a scrappier, faster-to-orbit approach can capture customers before Bezos's operation gets off the ground. Analysts like Quilty Space's Caleb Henry note that satellite internet is only now graduating from backup technology to something data centers might actually trust, so nobody should assume this will be quick or easy. Horowitz, for his part, insists EON is avoiding any real physics problems — just very hard engineering ones — and is betting that ground-based data volumes will keep climbing regardless of who wins the laser race.
My take
Betting seed money on beating hyperscaler-grade fiber speeds with lasers through clouds is either visionary or delusional, and probably both at once, which is exactly the kind of bet venture capital exists to make. The bigger tell here is that even skeptics agree the demand is real — moving data terrestrially just keeps getting more expensive and more fragile, so someone was going to try this eventually. Whether it's EON's twenty satellites or Bezos's five thousand that end up working, the undersea cable's centuries-long monopoly on long-haul data is clearly on notice.
