Empowering India’s next generation of innovators with ATL Saathi

Google DeepMind and India's Atal Innovation Mission have quietly rolled out a new tool called ATL Saathi, and it's aimed squarely at the unglamorous part of education technology: teacher training. Atal Tinkering Labs, the government-backed network that gives students access to 3D printers, robotics kits, and IoT gear, already reaches more than 1.1 crore — that's 11 million — students across India. But hardware alone doesn't teach anyone anything. Someone still has to guide the kid holding the soldering iron.

That's the gap ATL Saathi is built to fill. It's a Gemini-powered web app that gives every Tinkering Lab educator a round-the-clock planning assistant. Training modules and curriculum content live in NotebookLM, condensed into summaries, AI-generated infographics, short video overviews, and quizzes covering 12 core modules. Instead of teachers slogging through hour-long training videos, they get a compressed version they can actually use between classes.

The more interesting piece is the project-generation feature, which covers 10 core modules and supports what Google calls push-and-pull mentorship. Push mode lets a teacher instantly generate grade-appropriate project ideas to get students curious in the first place. Pull mode flips it: when a student shows up with their own half-formed idea, the AI spits out assembly steps, wiring diagrams, and safety precautions so the teacher can actually build it with them, safely, without needing to be a robotics expert themselves. The system runs on Gemini 3.5 Flash for that instant generation work, and the whole thing works in eight languages so far, reflecting how linguistically varied Indian classrooms actually are.

This grew out of a commitment Google made at the AI Impact Summit back in February 2026, where it pledged to help weave robotics and coding into local curricula and build a guardrailed AI assistant grounded in national standards. ATL Saathi is now live in a pilot cohort of 100 schools, with the explicit goal of cutting administrative load on teachers and making them more comfortable letting students tinker freely. NITI Aayog's Atal Innovation Mission has a stated target of cultivating a million young
