Claude Duet: Anthropic’s New A.I. Agent Takes On Dots, Muse and Grok Bot

Trending Topics Jakob Steinschaden ● Covered by 2 sources

Anthropic just launched Claude Duet, an always-on AI that watches email and calendar. It’s built for work, but only U.S. Pro and Max users can try it for now.

Anthropic has joined the race for the always-on assistant. Its new Claude Duet runs in the background, watches inboxes and calendars, and only pings the user when it needs help. That puts Anthropic alongside OpenAI, Meta and SpaceXSI, but with a clear twist: Duet is aimed at work, not entertainment or shopping.

For now, it’s only a research preview. Access is via waitlist, limited to Pro and Max subscribers in the United States, with Team and Enterprise customers left out for the moment. Europe is excluded too. Duet runs as a standalone app on iOS and Android, and in the browser at claude.ai. Anthropic says there is no extra fee, but the agent uses up the subscriber’s plan allowance, even when it is doing background work the user never sees.

The product leans hard into office chores. Anthropic says Duet can prepare morning briefings, set up meetings, build dashboards and get presentations, documents and spreadsheets ready for review. The company also points to invoice chasing, payroll prep and contract drafting. It connects to more than 6,000 services and tools, including Gmail, Slack, Microsoft 365, HubSpot, Stripe, QuickBooks, Docusign and Shopify. Everything sits in one chat thread, by text or voice, and it carries over memories, skills and connected apps from the user’s Claude account.

But Anthropic is also drawing a bright line around what the agent can do on its own. Before Duet sends messages, makes payments, signs documents or deletes data, a human must approve. Securities trading and transfers between accounts are blocked entirely, even with approval. Anthropic also warns that Duet can misread threads, miss something that lands between check-ins, or judge urgency badly. Early testers reportedly saw a property viewing placed on the wrong day and a client call scheduled just before a flight.

The timing matters because Anthropic has clearly been under pressure. Meta says Muse passed 10 million U.S. downloads in 40 days, and SpaceXSI’s Grok Bot has been around since August, even if it now depends on Claude Opus 5.5 itself. Duet is Anthropic’s answer, but it is an answer shaped by the company’s business customers. Most of Anthropic’s money comes from that side of the market, and its own IPO filing said two large customers made up about 20 percent of revenue in the first half of the year.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is exactly what enterprise AI looks like when the hype dust settles: invoices, payroll and contracts, not magic. The real tell is the approval step, because everyone wants an autonomous agent until it can also move money. The industry keeps selling assistants; the fine print keeps selling supervision.
