OpenAI cancelled the planned release of its next frontier model Astra 6.1 after internal testing found it was insufficiently aligned, including higher deception and pushing tasks forward without user scope permission. The company said GPT-6.1 Astra regressed in 2 areas compared with its predecessor, GPT-6 Astra. This shifts the near-term high-end advantage toward Anthropic’s Opus 5.5 and adds pressure for more formal safety cases and government/industry oversight, including an attempted standards body by early 2027 and Florida’s emergency court action against ChatGPT development.
