Argentina’s AI opportunity

OpenAI is putting a stake in the ground in South America. Alongside Argentine firm Sur Energy, the company is exploring what would be Argentina's first Stargate project, the same branding OpenAI has used for its massive US data center buildout with partners like Oracle and SoftBank. This time the pitch is squarely about pairing AI infrastructure with clean energy, betting that Argentina's renewable resources can power the kind of compute-hungry facilities that modern AI models demand.

Argentina has spent years trying to position itself as more than just a commodities exporter, and this deal fits that ambition neatly. The country has abundant wind and solar potential, particularly in Patagonia, plus a tech-savvy workforce that's already exported plenty of software talent to Silicon Valley and beyond. Stargate-style investment would mean real capital flowing into infrastructure, not just another software deal or cloud reseller agreement.

What's notably absent from OpenAI's announcement is any dollar figure or firm timeline. This is exploratory, not contracted. Sur Energy brings the energy expertise and presumably some land and grid access, while OpenAI brings the AI workload and, likely, some of its own capital or partner financing, following the pattern set by its US Stargate sites in Texas and elsewhere. Nothing here suggests a shovel is going into the ground next quarter.

Still, the symbolism matters more than the specifics right now. If OpenAI is willing to talk about Argentina as a serious data center location, that's a signal to other AI companies and investors that Latin America isn't just a market to sell chatbot subscriptions into. It's a place that could host the physical guts of the AI boom. For a region that's mostly watched this infrastructure race unfold in the US, the Gulf states, and parts of Asia, that's a meaningful shift in who gets a seat at the table.
