India’s telecom regulator, TRAI, moved to tighten the screws on AI-powered calling apps, and the mechanism is as telling as the rules. In a Friday amendment, caller-ID and call-management software must send user spam reports to telecom operators’ blockchain-based anti-spam platform—so “trust me, it’s spam” becomes “prove it to the network.” TRAI also capped termination charges for application-to-person calls at up to 5 paise per minute (about 0.052 cents), while requiring disclosures about AI or automated calling. Service exemptions and user block options remain, but the new sharing mandate makes compliance a data-flow problem, not a consumer-facing promise.
