Georg Friedrich Bernhard Riemann was a German mathematician who worked in analysis, number theory, and differential geometry. He is known for the first rigorous formulation of the integral, now called the Riemann integral, as well as for his work on Fourier series and for introducing Riemann surfaces in complex analysis. In 1859, he published a paper on the prime-counting function that included the original statement of the Riemann hypothesis and became a foundational work in analytic number theory. His work in differential geometry also laid foundations later used in the mathematics of general relativity.
