SynthID (model) refers to Google’s watermarking technology used to embed digital markers into AI-generated content and enable verification of whether images were created or edited using Google AI. Across recent coverage, SynthID has been rolled out through products such as Gemini, Search, Chrome, and Google Cloud, with verification capabilities added to the Gemini app and reported usage figures reaching tens of millions of verifications. The coverage also notes that while the watermark is difficult to break, it does not fully solve AI misinformation on its own, and other provenance efforts such as OpenAI’s Content Credentials were introduced alongside SynthID.
