ImageNet is a large-scale image database organized according to the WordNet hierarchy, containing over 14 million images across more than 20,000 categories with human annotations indicating depicted objects. The project provides image data freely to researchers for non-commercial use to support training large-scale object recognition models and advance computer vision research. ImageNet maintains quality-controlled and human-annotated images, aiming to provide approximately 1,000 images per concept in the WordNet hierarchy. Since 2010, the project has hosted an annual ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge competition where software programs compete on image classification and object detection tasks. The project is a collaborative effort involving Stanford University and Princeton University.
