Correlation does not establish causation. Market moves have many simultaneous causes — macro news, sector rotation, earnings and unrelated company events — and the timing of our daily closes may not align with when an event actually reached the market (pre-announcements, leaks, after-hours trading). Moves are shown next to the S&P 500 (SPY) over the same window so market-wide swings are visible, not hidden. None of this is investment advice.

The TLDRocket take Q2 2026 · written 5 Aug 2026
AMD beat again — $1.66 versus $1.63 expected, a fourth straight quarter of topping estimates. But look at the trend in the size of those beats: +14.8% last winter, then +4.8%, now +1.8%. The streak is real, the margin of surprise is shrinking. That's consistent with a company whose numbers are becoming more predictable as its AI business scales, not one losing steam — data center revenue hit $6.7 billion last quarter, more than doubling year over year, while gaming fell 31% on price hikes and component shortages. The mix shift is the story now, not the beat itself.
What's driving it is the full-stack pivot: Helios, the rack-scale AI training system, has commitments from Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI and Anthropic, and AMD is backing that relationship with up to $5 billion invested in Anthropic plus MI450 GPU supply for gigawatt-scale deployments planned in 2027. That's a multi-year bet, not something this quarter's EPS print can confirm or deny — the payoff is still mostly ahead of the tape. On the technical side, the MI355X has reportedly reached cost-competitive inference performance against NVIDIA's B300, and AMD's open Instella-MoE-16B model (trained on MI300X/MI325X) is aimed at showing its chips can handle the sprawling mixture-of-experts models — like Moonshot's 2.8-trillion-parameter Kimi K3 — that are becoming the frontier norm. Whether that translates into share taken from NVIDIA, still the dominant supplier here, is the open question the earnings alone can't answer.
One wrinkle worth flagging: Anthropic, now both a customer and a $5 billion investment, is reportedly building its own internal chip design team. That doesn't show up in any of these numbers, and it's too early to say what it means for AMD's supply relationship, but it's the kind of dependency worth watching rather than ignoring.
