Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats

Anthropic established a life sciences research group using Claude and reports that Claude autonomously discovered an enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeat DNA arrays while mining DNA databases. The discovery came after 21 hours of searching using roughly 950 agents over 210 million tokens. Anthropic says this led to identification of a previously uncharacterized enzyme system it calls ART and ongoing experiments to determine its function.
