Zopa is pushing further into conversational banking, letting current account customers use an AI voice assistant to handle everyday money jobs. The UK digital bank says people can now ask it to send money to friends, settle invoices and take care of routine tasks without hunting through menus.

The feature has already been trialled, and now it is going out to all of Zopa’s current account customers. Zopa has more than two million customers overall, so this is not a tiny experiment tucked away in a lab somewhere.

The assistant works through voice, but text still has a place too. Users can snap a photo of a bill and then tell Zopa what they want done, either by speaking or by writing in chat. The bank says the system can also remember preferences and shape the experience around the customer.

Zopa is building the service on its own AI platform and what it calls an “agentic architecture.” The pitch is simple enough: faster money management, less manual work, and a banking app that does more of the fiddly bits for you.

And this is happening as challenger banks keep adding more AI features of their own. Clare Gambardella, Zopa’s chief customer officer, says Ask Zopa is meant to shift the bank from helping with chores to helping people plan, save and make smarter decisions in real time.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

Voice banking is a neat demo and a decent convenience, but the real test is whether people trust it with actual money instead of just bill reminders. Challenger banks love dressing automation up as intimacy; sometimes it is, sometimes it is just a faster way to do the same old banking. Either way, the banks that make AI useful without making it creepy will win.
