Workiva puts business outcomes at the center of AI-native workflows

SiliconANGLE Victoria Gayton Covered by 7 sources

Workiva says AI workflows should start with the business result, not the tool. Its new Agent Studio lets non-coders build agents fast, which could change how finance and compliance teams work.

Workiva is pushing a simple idea: don’t bolt AI onto old processes and hope for magic. Start with the outcome you want, then redesign the work around it. That’s the message Kim Huffman, Workiva’s chief information officer, took to the company’s Amplify event, where she argued that AI needs to be woven into how people, processes and data all fit together.

Huffman’s point was blunt. If AI is treated as a side feature, the results will stay on the side too. She said the real target is measurable business outcomes, not just a little extra productivity for individual employees. That’s a more demanding standard, but it’s also the only one that matters when the work touches finance and compliance.

A big part of that redesign is trust. Huffman said AI has made data quality, data trust and data governance more important, not less. She also argued that governance can actually help organizations move faster because stronger controls make it easier to trust the outputs. In other words, the guardrails are supposed to speed things up, not slow everything down.

Workiva also used the event to announce Agent Studio, a tool that lets users build and customize agents without code. Huffman said teams that tried it were able to figure it out quickly and build something useful in a very short time. In days, she said, they had something working for a specific use case and could see immediate results. That kind of quick win matters, because employee adoption is where many AI plans go to die.

The broader lesson is familiar, but companies keep relearning it the hard way: AI is not a magic add-on. It changes workflows, ownership and trust, or it changes nothing at all. Workiva seems to understand that, which is more useful than another slide deck full of futuristic nouns.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is the rare sane AI pitch: show the workflow, show the trust model, then let people build. Too many vendors still sell shiny copilots and call it strategy, which is how you end up with expensive autocomplete and a management team acting impressed. Workiva at least sounds like it knows that AI without governance is just a faster way to be wrong.
