Vercel-backed Photon raises $4.5M to put AI agents inside iMessage and WhatsApp

Photon raised $4.5M to drop AI agents into iMessage and WhatsApp. It’s betting messaging is where people will actually use them, not another app.

Photon has raised $4.5 million in seed funding, with Gradient and A* co-leading the round. Vercel, HongShan, Z Fellows, Llama Ventures, Karman and several angel investors also joined in. The San Francisco startup is building Spectrum, an SDK that lets developers plug AI agents into iMessage, RCS, SMS, WhatsApp and other messaging channels.

The pitch came out of a small but telling moment: one of the founders’ friends could not tell an AI agent from a real person in an iMessage thread. For co-founder and CEO Daniel Tian, that was the point. The audience for agents is already in messaging, he argues, but messaging is locked up behind channel-by-channel plumbing. Photon’s answer is one integration instead of a pile of fragile ones.

That matters because the biggest messaging platforms are not making this easy. Apple does not have a public iMessage API for general agent use, and its Messages for Business product is limited to approved business conversations. Meta, meanwhile, updated WhatsApp Business API terms to block general-purpose AI chatbots starting January 15, 2026, while leaving task-specific business bots allowed. Photon is trying to sit in the middle of all that, and sell the bridge.

The company says the bridge is already getting traffic. It says more than 1 million end users have used its chat experience in under a year, that it has 50 paying customers, and that churn is under 3%. Revenue grew 10x from May to August, though Photon did not disclose the actual number. Message volume grew fivefold in September. It also shipped what it calls the first mini-app API on iMessage in June, letting agents send buttons, forms and live interfaces inside a thread, with mini apps requiring iOS 26.

Photon is also leaning hard into regulated industries. It says it is SOC 2 Type II certified and HIPAA-compliant, and the new money will go toward scaling iMessage business messaging, continuing Spectrum development and onboarding design partners. The company is the official iMessage adapter for Vercel’s Chat SDK and the default iMessage layer for Nous Research’s Hermes Agent, with additional integrations across Mastra, Convex, Render and Telnyx.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is the right bet: agents should meet people where the conversation already lives, not demand a shrine of yet another app icon. But the ugly part is obvious too — if Apple or Meta change the locks, everyone in this market is renting. That’s the real story in messaging AI: the platforms own the floor, and the startups are decorating someone else’s apartment.
