This startup is issuing AI-generated acne prescriptions

People in Utah can now use an app to get an acne prescription written by AI. Nolla Health, a healthcare startup, said on Monday that its system can analyze a face scan, judge acne severity, and generate a prescription without a doctor sitting in the middle of every case.

The company is rolling this out as a pilot, not a full free-for-all. For the first 100 patients, two physicians will approve each AI-generated prescription before it goes out. After that, the doctors step back and only review prescriptions after they’ve already been issued, for as many as 500 patients.

Then the oversight gets looser again. Nolla says physicians will review a sample of at least 10% of the prescriptions after that point. That is a very particular ramp for something as ordinary, and as sensitive, as acne treatment.

The setup is striking because it turns a medical chore into a software flow and makes the human review part shrink over time. That may be exactly the point: see how far the machine can go before the physicians have to catch up.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is classic startup behavior: start with the doctor in the loop, then quietly turn the loop into a speed bump. Acne is common, but prescriptions are still prescriptions, and “AI first, humans later” is becoming the industry’s favorite way to test public patience. The sales pitch is efficiency; the real product is how much oversight can be trimmed before anyone notices.
