Sakana AI Wins the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Award (Information and Communications Field) at the Japan Startup Awards 2026

Sakana AI has won the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Award in the information and communications field at the Japan Startup Awards 2026. The award goes to startups that have created impactful new businesses meant to serve as role models for the next generation, and the ceremony was held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Japan.

At the event, the company said it had the chance to explain its technology and efforts to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and other cabinet members. Its pitch is straightforward: while the global race to build ever-larger AI models is heating up and compute has become a constraint, Sakana AI is taking a different route.

Instead of leaning on giant infrastructure, it combines multiple small, efficient models. The company says that approach can still deliver strong performance, and that it could be a practical answer for Japan. That’s a notable argument at a moment when AI progress is often described in terms of scale, spending, and who can throw the most hardware at the problem.

Sakana AI also highlighted work in defense and security, including research and deployment of AI technology in that area. One example it mentioned to the prime minister was the use of cutting-edge AI in command-and-control systems. The company says this work helps build a foundation for Japan’s AI sovereignty by using domestically developed AI in critical fields.

The company closed by thanking people for recognizing both its original approach to AI and its challenge as a frontier AI company from Japan. It says it plans to keep pushing the limits of AI and speed up both research and real-world deployment.
