Sakana AI, SCSK, and Sumitomo Corporation Sign Comprehensive Business Partnership to Accelerate AI-Driven Social Implementation for Japan’s Industrial Transformation and Social Problem Solving

Sakana AI, SCSK and Sumitomo Corporation have agreed to a broad business partnership aimed at using AI to push Japanese industry forward and tackle social problems. The pitch is simple: don’t just install an AI model and call it progress. Make it useful in actual work, and make it stick.

That sounds obvious until you look at what the companies say is required. They argue that effective AI use has to connect with business processes, data, existing systems, quality controls, security, governance and day-to-day operations. In other words, the hard part is not finding a model. It’s making one behave inside a real company without handing over the keys to the kingdom.

The three companies are dividing the work along familiar lines. Sakana AI brings R&D and model development. SCSK brings integration and implementation. Sumitomo brings business development and industrial rollout. Together, they want to help customers move from problem definition and technical evaluation through to production use, verification and continuous improvement.

The first areas of focus are concrete enough to matter. One is enterprise projects that demand high reliability, quality and information security, where the partners plan to handle PoC work, design, implementation, quality management and ongoing operations. Another is cybersecurity, where they want to use Sakana AI’s Japan-developed orchestration model to support vulnerability diagnosis and remediation. They also plan joint development of enterprise AI products and services, plus work on social infrastructure, manufacturing and other sectors.

Sumitomo’s global city-making experience is part of the story too. The idea is to take what works in Japan and spread those lessons overseas. Sakana AI, founded in 2023 in Tokyo by David Ha, Ren Ito and Llion Jones, has been building tools such as The AI Scientist and multi-agent orchestration foundation models. SCSK, meanwhile, is already pushing AI-native products like PROACTIVE, NebulaShift and NebulaCore. This partnership looks like an attempt to turn all that into something companies can actually use.
