Helsinki startup Ambio has raised a €5.1 million seed round led by b2venture, with Montis and existing backer Lifeline Ventures also in the mix. The company wants to make recycled plastics procurement faster, more reliable, and a lot less of a blind date.

Founded in February 2023 by two former Slush team members, Ambio is building an AI-powered platform that covers the whole buying process. It starts with material discovery and sampling, then moves into sourcing, assessment, trading, and long-term deliveries. The company does not want to be a passive marketplace that merely matches buyers and sellers. It takes responsibility for sourcing, quality assurance, and delivery itself.

That matters because recycled plastics are messy business. Bergström says supply is fragmented, quality swings from batch to batch, and pricing is inefficient. In the EU, about 50,000 companies use plastics as raw materials, while around 1,500 recycle them. Add thousands of plastic variations, unstructured supplier data, and procurement that still runs through emails, phone calls, and WhatsApp, and you get a market that is hard to trust and even harder to scale.

Ambio’s answer is a proprietary dataset built from scratch. Early on, the founders had to contact recyclers directly because public inventories were incomplete or outdated. Now each transaction adds more information on quality, suppliers, pricing, and outcomes. The platform combines technical properties such as density, melt flow index, and impact strength with historical performance and unstructured context that LLMs help interpret.

Verification still matters. Ambio checks suppliers through physical or virtual visits, reviews documentation and certifications such as RecyClass, and then provides samples for customers to test. The company already serves customers in the Nordics and German-speaking Europe, has made its first hire in France, and sources from suppliers across Europe, including Poland, Romania, the Baltics, Germany, France, and the Benelux countries. b2venture’s Mathias Ockenfels says the business is building a moat from data, trust, and transaction-by-transaction learning. That is a very 2026-looking bet on an old problem: nobody wants to discover bad plastic after it has already hit the production line.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is the kind of B2B AI story that actually deserves the label: dull on the surface, useful underneath. The real product here is trust, and the startup world still underprices that because trust does not demo well on stage. Europe's recycling market has been begging for less theatre and more infrastructure.
