Figma used its first Config event in India to push harder on a simple idea: if AI is going to help build products, it needs house rules. The company introduced Figma Specs, a Markdown-based editor for defining a brand’s design language in plain terms, then tied it to the rest of the platform so teams and agents can treat it as a reference while they work.
Specs can live as its own file or sit inside the canvas. It is not just a text box, either. Users can point to Figma elements, embed FigJam diagrams, and pull in code layers and designs. Figma’s pitch is that this gives teams a central place to gather design libraries, code libraries, and guidelines so both human users and agents have less room to drift away from the system.
That matters because Figma is leaning into AI without pretending it is deterministic. The company said its canvas agent was made available to a wider group in the past week, and the new tools are meant to guide it toward more predictable results. Figma also moved code layers from private beta, announced in June, to public beta at the India event. Those layers let users add coding to designs on canvas for more interactive prototypes, and the agent can help turn a design into code or tweak the code for iteration.
Figma is also expanding the number of tools it can plug into through MCP. The company said it now supports more than 20 new tools, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and Sarvam, the Indian AI startup. And because Figma bought Payload last year, it is now wiring that open-source headless CMS into Figma Make, its product for generating dynamic websites and managing content directly. Figma said Payload’s downloads have risen sixfold in the last 12 months.
India is clearly a big part of this push. Figma opened its first office there late last year and says the country is its largest market outside the US by users. The company also said its platform works with 40% of India’s top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange. That is a serious foothold, and it explains why the company picked India to show off a more controlled, enterprise-flavored version of AI-assisted design.
My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting
This is the sensible kind of AI product work: less magic wand, more guardrails. Everyone selling agentic design tools is pretending the problem is output speed; Figma is admitting the real problem is keeping the machine inside the brand book. That’s the part worth shipping.
