Exa has shipped version 3.0, calling it the biggest search quality update yet for its search API aimed at AI agents. The pitch is simple enough: better results, more data, and less spend per request.

The update brings a larger embedding model and a much bigger index, including billions of new documents. Exa says that now includes 1.27 billion ecommerce listings and more than 211 million local businesses. That matters if the goal is not just search, but search that can actually feed an agent with usable facts.

There’s also a new feature called Dynamic Highlights. Instead of handing an agent a whole page of text, Exa says these highlights use 95% fewer tokens. That’s the kind of change that sounds boring until the bill shows up.

Pricing has shifted too. Exa Lite starts at $4 per 1,000 requests, while Exa Auto costs $7. The new release is available now through the API, and it’s the company’s second launch on Product Hunt.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is the right kind of AI tooling: less chatbot theater, more plumbing that saves tokens and money. Search for agents only gets serious when it stops acting like a demo and starts acting like infrastructure. Exa seems to understand that, which is refreshing in a market that still loves expensive smoke machines.
