DALL·E: Introducing outpainting

OpenAI just gave DALL·E a new trick called outpainting, and it's a bigger deal than the name suggests. Instead of being stuck with whatever square canvas the model first spits out, you can now push past the edges of an image and have DALL·E fill in the surrounding space, matching the lighting, perspective, and style of the original.

The pitch from OpenAI is simple: images of any size, not just the fixed dimensions the model has shipped with since launch. That sounds like a minor technical tweak, but it changes what people actually do with the tool. A single generated portrait can become a wide establishing shot. A tight product render can turn into a full scene with background, context, and mood built out panel by panel.

What makes this interesting is the storytelling angle OpenAI is leaning on. Outpainting isn't just about resolution or aspect ratio — it's about letting someone start with one idea and keep extending it outward, almost like building a mural one tile at a time. Comic panels, concept art, wide banners, all the stuff that used to require stitching together separate generations and hoping the seams didn't show.

There's an obvious craft implication here too. Anyone who's played with DALL·E knows the frustration of loving a generated image but wanting just a bit more of it — more sky, more room, more background detail.
