Cutting tool-output bloat in practice: one plugin reduced AWS Strands history from ~252K to ~9K tokens

pub.towardsai.net ● Covered by 2 sources

AWS Strands reruns of fixes initially kept about 252,000 tokens of agent history after eight log fetches. The plugin change stored large outputs externally using short IDs and reduced the chat context to about 9,000 tokens. Repeat calls were capped, so the agent’s loop behavior became more controlled and the chat stayed smaller.

Why it matters

Chew Loong Nian re-ran fixes using AWS’s open-source Strands agent framework, where eight log fetches left a default agent holding about 252,000 tokens of history. A plugin stored big outputs outside the chat and used a short ID, cutting context down to about 9,000 tokens, plus capping repeat calls to prevent runaway loops.
