Anthropic has opened a new office in Singapore, its fifth in Asia-Pacific, and signed a memorandum of understanding with Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information. The company says Singapore is one of its most active markets anywhere, with Claude already used by government and business customers that reach millions of people every day.
The partnership is aimed at the unglamorous but important parts of AI adoption: safety, security, model evaluation, research on how AI is changing work, and responsible use across public and private sectors. The MOU was signed during Singapore International Cyber Week by Kai Fong Chng, the ministry’s permanent secretary, and Anthropic co-founder Ben Mann. Minister Josephine Teo and Anthropic’s Michael Sellitto were there to witness it.
This isn’t a fresh relationship. Anthropic says it has been working with Singapore since 2023, when it joined the Generative AI Evaluation Sandbox run by the Infocomm Media Development Authority and the AI Verify Foundation. After that came a red-teaming project in English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil. Now the company says it will hold technical exchanges with Singapore’s safety and assurance institutions on model evaluation, testing standards, and incident response.
The business side is already deep. More than 1,500 engineers and technical staff at GovTech Singapore use Claude Code to modernize government systems and speed up software delivery. DBS uses Claude in Singapore for software development and day-to-day productivity. GIC is rolling it out across investment and corporate services. Grab says Claude powers BriX, its sales assistant, saving about 40,000 hours every quarter, while Sea uses Claude to improve Shopee’s customer service chatbot and help employees write and debug code.
Anthropic is also leaning on Singapore’s developer crowd. It hosted Builder Summit Singapore with more than 300 developers, and local community ambassadors held a meetup for more than 700 builders earlier in the week. The office is open, hiring, and clearly meant to make Anthropic less of a remote vendor and more of a neighbor.
My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting
This is the rare AI expansion story that actually sounds useful. Singapore keeps doing the unsexy work: testing, rules, and real deployments instead of surrendering to keynote fog. Closed models may keep selling the dream, but the adult move is still boring governance and local teams in the room.
