Anthropic joins Meta and OpenAI’s personal AI assistant race with Claude Duet

Fortune Wen Shao ● Covered by 8 sources

Anthropic launched Claude Duet, an AI assistant that checks email, calendars and apps even when you’re away. It’s a direct shot at Meta and OpenAI, and it could keep Claude users from drifting off to rival assistants.

Anthropic has entered the personal-assistant race with Claude Duet, a new app for professionals and small-business owners that can keep working after they stop typing. The company announced it Wednesday as a research preview, putting Claude into the same fight Meta and OpenAI are already waging for everyday user attention.

Duet is built to look across connected accounts for things like unpaid invoices, draft replies and unfinished tasks. It sends a morning briefing, keeps checking through the day, and pings the user when it has finished something or needs a decision. The pitch is simple: less time figuring out what to ask, more time letting the assistant spot work on its own.

That matters because these assistants can become the first place people turn when they need something done. They pull together email, calendars and other apps, remember preferences and act across services. Anthropic knows the risk here. Without its own version, Claude could lose those daily touchpoints to Meta’s Muse or OpenAI’s Dots, even if some users still prefer Claude itself.

The company says Duet is aimed at people handling invoices, payroll and customer follow-ups. That keeps with Anthropic’s heavy focus on work. In April, it said more than 1,000 business customers were each spending over $1 million on an annualized basis, up from two months earlier. Duet extends that push by bringing more of the admin layer into a single subscriber’s hands, though Anthropic has not said what it will charge after the preview.

There are also limits. Duet uses the memories, skills and app connections already set up in Claude, and its background checks count against the same usage quota as normal chats. Anthropic says it will check connected accounts every few hours rather than constantly, since nonstop monitoring would burn through limits too fast. And access won’t be instant for everyone: Team and Enterprise customers have to wait, while Anthropic also says compute capacity could affect how fast users get in.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is less a moonshot than a defensive maneuver, and that’s fine. The real prize in AI isn’t the cleverest demo; it’s the assistant that becomes habit. If Claude isn’t sitting in the daily loop, someone else will happily take the slot and call it productivity.
