Aflabox raises €1.35M seed to bring food safety testing into the field

Italian startup Aflabox just raised €1.35M to test crops for toxins right in the field, in under 90 seconds. That matters because dodgy mycotoxin testing usually means days of waiting and expensive labs — bad news for farmers who need answers now.
Mycotoxin contamination is one of those problems that sounds niche until you realize it quietly wrecks harvests, export deals, and sometimes public health, especially in regions without easy access to certified labs. Aflabox, founded by Luca Alinovi and Fabrizio Cardillo, wants to fix the bottleneck by putting the lab in your pocket instead of making the crop travel to it. The Italian agritech company just closed a €1.35 million seed round through FoodSeed, the agrifood accelerator under CDP Venture Capital's National Accelerator Network run by Eatable Adventures, with extra backing from Farming Future, the tech transfer hub CDP Venture Capital SGR set up with ToSeed & Partners.
What Aflabox has actually built is a handheld device that pairs UV and white-light imaging with AI to spot contamination and quality issues in under 90 seconds. Compare that to conventional testing, which often means shipping samples to a specialized facility and waiting anywhere from several hours to several days for results. For a farmer trying to decide whether to sell a batch of grain today, that delay isn't a minor inconvenience — it's the difference between capturing value and losing it.
The interesting part isn't just the speed, though. Every scan gets geotagged and dumped into a cloud dashboard, which means Aflabox is quietly building a live map of contamination risk across whole supply chains. Collection centers, exporters, processors, even government food safety agencies could theoretically use that aggregated data to spot problem regions before they become crises, rather than reacting after the fact. That's a genuinely different value proposition than just selling faster test kits — it's positioning the company as an infrastructure layer for food safety intelligence.
The fresh capital is earmarked for some very concrete next steps: getting the device formally validated and certified, tightening up the AI's detection accuracy, and setting up a micro-factory to actually manufacture the hardware at scale. Aflabox is also doubling down commercially in Kenya, Nigeria, and Italy — a telling mix of markets where mycotoxin risk and export ambitions collide. And the company plans to widen its distribution across both Africa and Europe while growing the team behind it.
Whether €1.35 million is enough to pull off certification, manufacturing, and a two-continent expansion simultaneously is the open question nobody's answering yet. Hardware startups tend to eat seed rounds fast once regulatory validation enters the picture.
My take
I like this one because it's solving a boring, unglamorous problem that actually costs people money and sometimes makes them sick — not chasing another chatbot wrapper. The Kenya-Nigeria-Italy market mix is the smart part: mycotoxin risk is a genuine crisis in parts of Africa, and building the tool where the pain is worst beats retrofitting it later for PR points. My only worry is the classic hardware-startup trap — certification and micro-factories are expensive, slow, and unforgiving, and €1.35M won't stretch far across three countries and two continents.
