Sue Desmond-Hellmann is an American oncologist and biotechnology leader who serves on the board of directors of OpenAI, a position she was elected to in March 2024. She previously served as chief executive officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation from 2014 to 2020. Before that, she was Chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco, the first woman to hold that position, and held the title of Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Distinguished Professor. She joined the OpenAI board alongside Nicole Seligman and Fidji Simo as part of an expansion of new board members.
