Marc Andreessen is an American venture capitalist and former software engineer best known as co-founder and general partner of Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), a major Silicon Valley venture capital firm. He first rose to prominence as co-author of Mosaic, one of the earliest web browsers, and as co-founder of Netscape Communications, which commercialized web browsing in the 1990s. He later co-founded the enterprise software company Loudcloud, which became Opsware and was sold to Hewlett-Packard, as well as the social networking platform Ning. He currently serves on corporate boards including Meta (formerly Facebook) and Samsara, and remains an active investor and commentator on technology policy.
