Today’s biggest AI thread is about scale—specifically, how companies are trying to keep learning and inference from melting down when you push it beyond Earth. Alphabet is testing that idea in orbit with Project Suncatcher, a refrigerator-sized satellite that launched Oct. 1 carrying four TPU chips to measure whether the hardware can survive launch vibration, radiation, and the thermal swings of low Earth orbit. Google plans to run the chips only in 15-minute bursts to manage overheating, then gather data over about a year, with two more laser-communication satellite launches penciled in for 2027. It’s the same logic driving the corporate spending wave: Big Tech is budgeting more than $700 billion this year for Earth-based AI infrastructure, including Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon, with the bet that productivity gains—especially in healthcare, where U.S. spending hit $5.3 trillion in 2024—will justify the capex.
