Anthropic's decision to build its own AI chips marks the week's clearest signal: the compute bottleneck is real, and the companies that own their silicon will scale faster. Hiring a chip design team to co-develop hardware and models with Samsung as a manufacturing partner isn't a nice-to-have—it's a necessity as Claude demand strains existing arrangements with AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD. OpenAI, Meta, and others are following the same playbook, but Anthropic is moving with purpose. Meanwhile, Samsung itself unveiled a 3D-memory architecture stacking high-bandwidth memory directly onto AI accelerators, delivering 8x performance gains over next-generation HBM5. The infrastructure race is accelerating, and it's increasingly vertical: companies that control the stack—from silicon to software—will own the economics.
