OpenAI tried to put math back at the center of its agenda today, forming an independent mathematics and AI advisory group hosted by the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. The point isn’t oversight of OpenAI’s decisions—the group has advisory and release-coordination input only—but it signals a shift toward proving progress with harder external yardsticks. OpenAI also claimed its internal model has resolved more than 100 additional open problems, a number that matters because “benchmarks” are easy to argue about and refereed proofs are not.
