What does a Data Scientist really do?
Eugene Yan 7 years ago
A data scientist describes the actual work of data scientists, countering widespread misconceptions that the role primarily involves machine learning and requires PhDs and advanced math skills. Machine learning comprises less than 20% of typical data science work, with the majority involving problem framing, data preparation, infrastructure building, experimentation, and productionization. The most successful data scientists focus on delivering measurable business value through data rather than pursuing cutting-edge research or novel algorithms.
