Sakana AI's Ren Ito Appointed as Founding Member of UN "AI for Good" Global Committee

Ren Ito, the co-founder and chairman of Tokyo-based Sakana AI, has been named a founding member of the AI for Good Global Commission, a body freshly stood up under the United Nations' AI for Good platform. It is not a small club. Roughly 40 global leaders from government, industry, and international organizations make up the group, and the guest list reads like a who's-who of tech and pharma: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Pfizer chairman Albert Bourla, Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, all co-chaired by Salesforce's Marc Benioff.

What the commission is actually meant to do is broader than any single company's product roadmap. It's tasked with wrestling over AI's trustworthiness, its governance, and how it actually gets deployed in the real world — the kind of questions that don't have a clean benchmark score attached to them. The group's inaugural meeting is set for Geneva, and from there Sakana AI says it plans to keep contributing to the international conversation around building an AI ecosystem people can actually trust.

This didn't come out of nowhere. The ITU, the UN's specialized agency for digital technology, has run the AI for Good platform since 2017, using it to hunt for AI applications that can move the needle on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, including through its annual AI for Good Global Summit. The new Global Commission is essentially the next rung up that ladder: a multistakeholder initiative meant to tackle the technical, socio-economic, and policy snarls around AI, with the stated goal of strengthening trust, backing responsible innovation, and spreading the economic and social upside more widely.

For Sakana AI, getting a seat at that table alongside Nvidia and Salesforce is notable less for the prestige and more for what it signals — that a company built on a different research philosophy than the usual scale-everything approach is being invited into rooms where global AI policy actually gets debated, not just where products get pitched.
