Cline Desktop App

Cline is pitching its new Desktop app as a place to put your preferred model to work without locking yourself into one vendor. The launch page says the app is open source and built for open-weight models, with the promise that users can pick the models and providers that suit them best.

The app is set up around agent work. Cline says Desktop can run multiple agent sessions at once, automate recurring tasks, and extend what those agents can do through its Marketplace. That makes the product sound less like a chat window and more like a workbench for model-driven workflows.

There’s also a continuity angle here. Cline says work can continue from agents like Claude Code and Codex, which suggests the company wants Desktop to sit in the middle of a broader setup rather than force a clean break. That matters if you’re already using more than one tool and don’t want to restart every time.

The pitch is pretty direct: use the model you want, use the provider you want, and keep the whole thing outside a closed ecosystem. That’s a familiar open-source argument, but Cline is framing it around practical day-to-day usage instead of ideology. The launch page even puts the focus on the harness doing the work behind the models, which is a neat way of saying the plumbing matters too.
