OpenAI introduced Deep Research, an AI agent that synthesizes information from online sources to complete complex, multi-step research tasks. The tool became available to Pro tier users immediately, with rollout to Plus and Team plans to follow. A separate open-source reproduction of the system was also released, achieving 55.15% accuracy on the GAIA benchmark.

The New York Times’ unredacted filings in its copyright lawsuit accuse Microsoft and OpenAI of scraping paywalled news at large scale, alleging mid-training datasets included 91,692+ copies of works from the NYT, Daily News, and the Center for Investigative Reporting, with claims that paywall bypasses and copyright-notice stripping could weaken their fair-use stance. That legal pressure landed alongside a broader “prove it” push: Anthropic launched the Life Sciences Verification Program for Mythos, Opus, and Sonnet, adding biology-tailored safeguards and requiring 30 days of data retention for offline monitoring of flagged usage patterns, with High-risk access limited today to Opus 5 and Sonnet 5.
