Bun, a JavaScript runtime with 22 million monthly downloads, was rewritten from Zig to Rust over 11 days using Claude Code and AI agents to systematically prevent memory safety bugs. The rewrite ported 535,496 lines of code while maintaining the existing test suite, improving startup performance on Linux by 10 percent and enabling the Rust compiler to catch memory safety errors at compile time.
